Woman 26 threatens to divorce stingy husband

By Nancy Malwele A 26 year old woman of Lusaka’s Chawama Compound has threatened to abandon her matrimonial home because of her husband’s stinginess. Carol Banda has since regretted the day she dropped out of school in preference for marriage after failing to stomach her husband’s selfishness. Banda a house wife and a mother of two alleged that her husband Geoffrey who works as a bricklayer was not supporting his family and that he was in the habit of rationing the little food and money they had, leaving his family wallowing in poverty. “I got married in 2012 after dropping out of school in grade nine. My husband was very supportive and responsible but he suddenly changed. What I know is that my husband gets a salary of K1, 500 but he does not give me any money,” she complained. Banda accused Geoffrey of being stingy with food and money and that she tried to discuss problems that were bedevilling their marriage with his relatives but nothing has changed. She said that Geoffrey was not looking after the family well as he was in the habit of hiding his salary from her. Banda further complained that she had suffered enough since her husband was abusing her emotionally adding that she wants her husband to change his behaviour for the sake of their two children. Banda said that it was time for her to leave Geoffrey because he goes to an extent of spending money on his mistress at the expense of her well-being. She said that her husband usually leaves a K5 as ration money for the day adding that the money would only be enough to buy vegetables. “I will leave this man because I have suffered enough at his hands. I have decided to go back to school because I’m still very young and I have a bright future ahead of me, I have realised that marriage is just hindering my progress,” she stated. However, efforts to get a comment from Banda’s husband Geoffrey proved futile as he was unavailable.
