SOUTH AFRICANS are the most romantic long-distance lovers, according to new research. According to the statistics released by money transfer service World Remit, South Africans abroad send an average of £93 more to their loved ones for Valentine’s Day. They are followed closely behind by Indians, Indonesians and Nigerians who send on average £50, £46 and £24 more on February 14 respectively. The global data was based on an internal analysis of WorldRemit’s top 15 recipient countries in the months of January and February 2015.
Figures also showed that while South Africans are the most generous lovers on Valentine’s Day, Cameroonians overseas topped the list when it comes to calling home to speak to loved ones.
Figures revealed they sent twice the number of airtime transfers on Valentine’s Day in 2015 compared to an average day in February.
Alix Murphy, Senior Mobile Analyst at WorldRemit said: “Looking at the data we can see that South Africans, Indians and Indonesians living abroad are planning ahead and sending more money to their loved ones in the days leading up to Valentine’s Day. Last year, these groups sent £20 - £60 more on average for Valentine’s Day compared to the following week. Meanwhile people from Cameroon, Bangladesh and Uganda are sending more airtime transfers on Valentine’s Day itself so that they can speak to their loved ones to mark the occasion.”
